This unique expression was created by Clase Azul México, marking their first venture into smoky tequila as of 2025. The process involves an ancestral cooking method similar to that used in mezcal, employing blue Weber agave sourced from the distinguished Los Altos de Jalisco region.

The production of Clase Azul Blanco Ahumado is a meticulous craft. Unlike conventional methods that utilize standard ovens, the piñas of the blue Weber agave are slow-roasted in an underground pit oven, which is fueled by wood and lined with volcanic stone. This special technique contributes to the tequila's distinct flavor profile, combining the natural sweetness of the agave with subtle smoky notes.

Once the agave is roasted, it is shredded and fermented with a proprietary yeast strain cultivated from local wild varieties. The final distillation process occurs in traditional copper pot stills, reflecting a commitment to quality and authenticity. The goal, as described by Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco, aims to capture the essence of traditional mezcal-making while celebrating the inherent character of the blue agave.

Tasting notes

Appearance: Crystal clear with silver highlights.

Nose: Smoked agave, fresh plum and red apple.

Palate: Bright lemon and a clean mineral edge.

Finish: Fresh and silky, with soft smoky undertones.

To truly experience Clase Azul Blanco Ahumado, it is recommended to serve it neat in a flute glass. This allows the drinker to savor the exquisite balance between the agave's sweetness and the gentle smoke. It also makes for a fantastic ingredient in premium cocktails such as a smoky margarita or paloma.

The decanter

The aesthetic of the bottle itself is another testament to the craftsmanship behind the tequila. Its semi-opaque glass is reminiscent of the smoke from the cooking process, while the textured ceramic base nods to the volcanic stones integral to roasting the agave. This particular release is not just a spirit but an experience, beautifully packaged in an exclusive collector's case, making it a remarkable gift for enthusiasts of tequila and mezcal.

Key facts

Brand: Clase Azul México

Style: Blanco (unaged), smoked

Agave: 100% Blue Weber

Region: Los Altos de Jalisco, Mexico

Cooking: Wood-fired underground pit oven with volcanic stone

Distillation: Double distilled in copper pot stills

ABV: 45%

Certification: Kosher (OK Kosher)
