It was Philip whose 1395 edict banished Gamay from the Côte d'Or and made Pinot Noir the grape of Burgundy's great red wines, so a Pinot Noir from his old estate carries a little history in every bottle. Owned by Crédit Agricole since 2010, the domaine has climbed steadily in quality under a modern cuverie and gentler, lower-oak winemaking, and in 2019 it expanded into the Côte de Nuits with parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Clos de Vougeot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGevrey-Chambertin is the largest village of the Côte de Nuits and home to nine Grands Crus, Chambertin and Clos de Bèze among them. The domaine's vines here grow on free-draining clay and sand over limestone-rich subsoil, which pushes the roots deep and concentrates flavour. Grapes are sorted for only pristine fruit, cold-soaked with a portion of whole bunches, and fermented with gentle punch-downs and pump-overs before around 18 months in French oak barrels, only a modest share of them new. Just \u003cstrong\u003e5,409 bottles\u003c\/strong\u003e of the 2022 were produced.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eExpect a classic, dark-fruited Gevrey: blackcurrant and black cherry on the nose with a light touch of cedar, opening on the palate to dark berries, liquorice and a hint of pepper, framed by silky tannins and a long, gently toasty finish. The ripe, generous 2022 vintage makes it approachable now after a short decant, while it has the structure to develop for several more years in the cellar.
