In 2000 the Incisa della Rocchetta family released the first vintage of \u003cstrong\u003eGuidalberto\u003c\/strong\u003e, conceived as a more approachable companion to Sassicaia that could be enjoyed far earlier, yet one that has since proven a surprising ability to age. It takes its name from Guidalberto della Gherardesca, the 19th-century ancestor who planted Bolgheri's famous five-kilometre avenue of cypress trees.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e2023 was a demanding year on the Tuscan coast, with heat, rain and mildew pressure testing the early-ripening Merlot, while the Cabernet Sauvignon thrived. The estate responded with rigorous selection and shifted the blend towards Cabernet: \u003cstrong\u003e55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot\u003c\/strong\u003e, compared with the usual Merlot-led cuvée. Grapes were hand-picked between early September and early October, sorted in the vineyard and again in the cellar, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and matured in French and American oak barriques.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDeep ruby with a purple rim, the nose is lifted and aromatic, with blackberry, blueberry and ripe cherry joined by violets, Mediterranean herbs, cedar and a hint of cigar box. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, polished and fresh, with juicy dark fruit, a touch of blood orange and sweet spice, and fine, silky tannins leading to a long finish with a faint saline lift. Delicious now after 30 minutes in the decanter, it will drink beautifully into the early 2030s.
