What is Bowmore 21 Year Old Sherry Oak Cask?
Bowmore 21 is the oldest and most prestigious expression in Bowmore's Sherry Oak Collection, a range launched in 2024 that also includes 12, 15 and 18 year old whiskies.
The whisky spends 21 years maturing in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak Oloroso sherry casks, before a final finish in first-fill Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks. That PX finish is what gives it its rich, dark-fruit sweetness, layered over Bowmore's signature Islay smoke.
Bowmore is Islay's oldest distillery, founded in 1779, and its whisky today is overseen by Master Blender Calum Fraser.
Why it won
Sherry and peat are a rare pairing on Islay. Most of the island's distilleries lead with smoke; Bowmore 21 proves that heavy sherry influence and coastal peat can sit together in genuine balance rather than fighting for attention.
