Frequently asked questions
Is all Champagne vintage?
No — most Champagne is non-vintage (NV), blended from multiple years to maintain a consistent house style. Vintage Champagne is made entirely from grapes harvested in a single, exceptional year and is only released when that year's quality justifies it.
Does Champagne need to be served ice cold?
Serve it well-chilled, around 8-10°C, but not straight from the freezer — over-chilling mutes the aromas. An ice bucket with water and ice for 20-30 minutes works better than a few minutes in the freezer.
What's the difference between Champagne and other sparkling wine?
Champagne can only be called Champagne if it's produced in the Champagne region of France using the traditional method. Sparkling wine made the same way elsewhere — English sparkling wine or Crémant, for example — can be excellent, but legally cannot use the Champagne name.
How long does an unopened bottle of Champagne last?
Non-vintage Champagne is generally best enjoyed within 3-4 years of purchase; vintage Champagne can often improve for a decade or more when stored correctly, lying on its side in a cool, dark place.
