Louis Roederer is one of the last great family-owned Champagne houses, and one of the few that farms almost all of its own vineyards. Its Late Release series brings back a handful of mature Brut Vintages that the house held in its Reims cellars for more than two decades. Each was released in strictly limited numbers, around 1,000 bottles per vintage, and in its original disgorgement, so the wine has aged slowly in bottle exactly as the cellar master intended.

Roederer's Brut Vintage is a Pinot Noir-led blend, softened with Chardonnay. The Pinot Noir comes mainly from Verzy on the Montagne de Reims, and the Chardonnay largely from a single plot in Chouilly.
The 1997 vintage was firm and structured. Mirabelle plum is framed by bright lemon on the nose, and the palate is fresh and chalky, with light anise tones and the tension to keep developing.
