Tenuta San Guido is the Bolgheri estate that changed Italian wine for ever with Sassicaia, the original Super Tuscan. In 2000 the Incisa della Rocchetta family released the first vintage of Guidalberto, conceived as a more approachable companion to Sassicaia that could be enjoyed far earlier, yet one that has since proven a surprising ability to age. It takes its name from Guidalberto della Gherardesca, the 19th-century ancestor who planted Bolgheri's famous five-kilometre avenue of cypress trees.

2023 was a demanding year on the Tuscan coast, with heat, rain and mildew pressure testing the early-ripening Merlot, while the Cabernet Sauvignon thrived. The estate responded with rigorous selection and shifted the blend towards Cabernet: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, compared with the usual Merlot-led cuvée. Grapes were hand-picked between early September and early October, sorted in the vineyard and again in the cellar, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and matured in French and American oak barriques.
Delicious now after 30 minutes in the decanter, it will drink beautifully into the early 2030s. Serve at 16–18°C alongside roast or grilled red meat, game, ragù or aged cheeses.
