Bowmore is Islay's oldest licensed distillery, founded in 1779, famed for maturing its whisky in the legendary No.1 Vaults — the oldest whisky warehouse in Scotland, sitting partly below sea level on the shore of Loch Indaal. This proximity to the sea gives Bowmore's whisky its distinctive maritime character, balanced against the distillery's signature gentle peat smoke.
The Bowmore 1969 50 Year Old is the final release in Bowmore's Vault Series, one of the most extraordinary bottlings ever produced by the distillery. Distilled in 1969 and matured for five decades in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks, it was bottled in 2021 at natural cask strength of 46.9% ABV, with only 339 bottles released worldwide.
Nose: rich tropical fruits, ripe mango, passion fruit and papaya intertwine with polished oak, honeycomb, dark chocolate and gentle maritime smoke, with delicate hints of leather and exotic spice.
Palate: luxuriously smooth and layered, with dried fruits, caramelised citrus, toffee, roasted nuts and soft vanilla; the characteristic Bowmore peat emerges subtly alongside sea salt and elegant floral notes.
Finish: exceptionally long and sophisticated, with lingering tropical fruit, sweet oak, gentle smoke and coastal salinity.
