Diamond Creek was founded in 1968 by Al Brounstein on Diamond Mountain, just south of Calistoga, and became one of Napa Valley's first estates to bottle Cabernet Sauvignon by individual vineyard. Its hillside blocks, Volcanic Hill, Red Rock Terrace and Gravelly Meadow, each sit on a different soil, and the Diamond Creek estate is today part of the Maison Louis Roederer family.

Lake is the rarest of them all. At roughly three-quarters of an acre, it is the estate's smallest, coolest and wettest site, and it is bottled on its own only in years when the quality justifies it. In other years its fruit goes into Gravelly Meadow, so Lake has been bottled only around 14 times since its first vintage in 1978, making each bottling a collector's piece.
The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in new French oak. Expect a cooler-climate Cabernet of real finesse: dark cherry, cassis and graphite, with fine-grained mountain tannins, fresh acidity and the structure to age for decades. Decant before serving at around 16–18°C.
