Imperial 1979 43 Year Old Private Collection

Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin is Scotland's most celebrated independent bottler, founded in 1895 and renowned for laying down and releasing single malts under licence from distilleries across Scotland. Their Private Collection — Recollection Series revives and celebrates the character of distilleries that have since fallen silent and closed.

This superb 43 Year Old Speyside single malt was put down to rest at the Imperial distillery on 16th July 1979 and bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for their Private Collection on 12th January 2023, drawn from a single refill American hogshead with an outturn of just 133 bottles. Imperial distillery closed in 1998 and was demolished in 2013, making surviving casks such as this increasingly scarce. Presented in a beautiful oak case, this is a must for any serious whisky collector.

The nose offers ripe green apple and exotic fruit with subtle ginger spice, Sicilian lemon zest, soft aged leather and a hint of marzipan. The palate brings sweet pineapple and dried banana with herbal influences, grapefruit and Brazil nut giving way to mature oak. The finish is full and long, with cocoa powder and fresh mint.
